Excellence in Supply Chain Management- March 29,Royal Palm Golf & Country club
Message from Congress Chairman
It is a great honour to be invited to attend your annual International Supply Chain Congress here in Lahore, Pakistan. It is my first visit to Pakistan and a nice opportunity to learn about your culture and business practices.
I have been working for my whole life in international supply chain management and logistics in various companies. Until 2010 I was Vice president in Yamaha Motor Europe, the European HQ for Yamaha Motor Japan and I was responsible for the concept, implementation and operations of a total new logistics operation.
Now I am independent interim and project manager in international logistics and supply chain management and I assist many companies in achieving their logistics and operational targets.
I come from The Netherlands, a country that fits 5 times in the Punjab, and 20 times in Pakistan. A big part of our country is below sea level. With 17 million inhabitants we represent around 5% of EU population. We have a great tradition in living with water, and I have chosen a theme for my own company related to water and my logistics background: the destination is determined by the control over the sails, not by the direction of the wind.
International supply chain management balances between production, sales and financial requirements and targets. Only by having logistics and supply chain management represented in the Board of the company will allow optimal decisions made. It has taken many years, also in Europe, that companies started to understand the importance of a logistics position in Board and senior management. And it has given clear results when we speak about the benefits for company results, not only in financial, but also in terms of services and information, deliveries and availability.
In the European market, many logistics operations are outsourced. The decision to outsource must be made in a very clear way. Warehousing, transport, distribution and what I call trade facilitation (customs, safety, security) will increase complexity of logistics and supply chain management. Multi modal transport options require proper decision models and systems, while continuous new countermeasures on customs, security, safety and health conditions require flexibility in supply chains and logistics operations.
For me it is a great opportunity to announce Supply Chain Excellence Awards 2013 and I am looking forward to exchange opinions.
